The first-generation 3-way lamps comprising of two filaments – one 25W and the other 50W. The lamps would turn on the first filament with a 50% brightness setting, then light up the second filament with a 100% brightness setting on the second click, providing a high-intensity light output.

The Mechanism of Operation of the 3-way Lamp
The 3-way lamp requires a three-way bulb and three-way socket to function correctly. The bulb has three filaments; two are of different wattage while the third one is a combination of the two. For instance, if one filament provides 30Watts and the other 70Watts, the third filament will emit an intense 100Watts.
The socket contains a switch that operates in a sequence to light up the filaments. For every click of the switch, the circuit connects one of the filaments to a power source, allowing it to glow. The switch has three positions that provide three light settings, “low,” “medium,” and “high.”
The “low” setting only powers the first filament, providing a mild, warm light output. The “medium” setting lights up both the first and second filaments, producing a brighter and comfortable lighting mood.
